Pentax have released a limited edition Rainbow camera. While I love colour I find this camera to be visually disgusting. I believe it is because of everything I’ve learnt about colour through design. I’m sure if I didn’t know what I know about colour I would love this camera. Instead I find it an eyesore…..
I would like to unlearn everything I’ve learnt as a designer. I would like to forget all the knowledge I’ve accumulated over the years about type, line, colour, form. Maybe this way I could learn to love the camera above. However I feel if I attempted this it may take longer than it did to gain this knowledge. Oh the woe!

Don’t worry Kitty, it’s not you, it’s the camera, it really is hideous. But even more so than the colors I’m bothered by that “hip” message on the screen. In Japan you see endless variations on that message everyday, perhaps because it is so simplistic that even Japanese schools equip you well enough to grasp the basic grammatical structure.
Today on the train to work I saw the worst one so far, from a whiskey maker:
“No music no whiskey”. I have no idea, whatsoever, they want to say with that. The other way around I sort of understand but…
Anyway. We can never unlearn.
The only true benefit of a liberal arts eduction is to make our minds a more pleasant place to live in.
Looking forward to more colorful updates on your blog!
